High-resolution lens flares

High-resolution lens flares

Postby Dratz-_C » 11 May 2013, 04:47

Hi Folks,
I have created a set of 1024x1024 lens flares in GIMP. I will furnish the project file upon request. I intend them to be in the style of the existing set. These 16 lens flares are packaged into a 4096x4096 lensflares.png which can replace the 512x512 file in the particles folder. I was hoping that a larger size lens flare effect would be possible while still maintaining acceptable detail. In case they are desired I have made 3 smaller resampled sets. One is a 512x512 matrix image of 16 128x128 lens flare images for the contingency where swapping individual lens flares cells with the original 512x512 image is desired. The 2nd is a 1024x1024 matrix image of 16 256x256 lens flare images for the possibility that my 4096x4096 source resolution is far too large. The 3rd is a 2048x2048 matrix image of 16 512x512 lens flare images in the event that my source resolution was marginally too big to be practical.
I place this work under a Image license. If you have any thoughts, comments or advice on this matter please post about them here.

+1, should be put in the default game IMO. It's only 2 MB or so afterall.

Hi again folks,
While I am at it I will ask a question about a lens flare issue I am having with a flared sun placed at the zenith. I am using the SVN 5597; I think this started happening just before "Elara Edition" was released. When I look at a 90 degree pitch I see the flare effect but as I roll the flare goes away half the time even though my pitch is still 90 degrees. To be clear, I am still looking at the zenith. Is this intended behavior and if not could it be fixed for this type of scenario? I would like to thank you for your your help.
Cheers

Here are some screen shots taken with SVN 5602.

I look up. There is a flare. I spin and half the time there is no flare. I pointed the sunlight entity at high noon and sparkle-flared it. However the sun takes a vacation 50% of the time leaving no visible light source.

Does it fade away as you move the camera, or does it just glitch out? I haven't responded because the report is extremely vague and I don't have the ability to test it myself at the moment.

Quin,
First, let me thank you for discussing this subject me. Where the report has been ambiguous, I apologize. I am starting with pointing the camera directly upward, looking at the sunlight entity flare at its brightest. It fades away unexpectedly but smoothly as I turn the camera 90 degrees. The remaining 180 degrees of turn show no flare. As I keep spinning the camera during the next 90 degrees the flare fades back in. It also fades away but expectedly as I pitch the camera down. Should you get the ability to test it yourself, my map is at viewtopic.php?f=73&t=3476 . You may download it from the top of the thread. Start the offline practice game on Quaterion version 0.2.5.5.4.7 then just look 90 degrees vertical and twist the camera.
To reproduce this anomaly, create a new map. Then type /entset sunlight 0 0 255 255 255 0 1 (for this anomaly 2 and 3 work for the flare value as well). Now exit editmode by pressing F1. Push the mouse forward to look up as high as you can. Slowly move the mouse right to spin the camera 360 degrees. To make it easier to evaluate you may type /flaresize 200 . You should see the behavior in the flare that I have described. Would more pictures help?

No, that tells me everything I need, thanks. I know what is causing the issue and will ask that you submit a ticket to the tracker so that I can fix it when I return to work.

Quin,
I have submitted the ticket under the summary title "lens flare fade anomaly." It uses most of the text of my previous post. Thank you for availing your expertise to remedy the anomaly.

Hi Folks,
I have updated the archive in the first post with 3 smaller sizes of lens flare sets. Where you want to use them, please redownload the original zip. You have my thanks in kind.

Yeah, I'm living in my car at the moment, and this bug needs time for me to fiddle with it.

Ok, I am sorry that you still are having to live in your car and am concerned that the weather is treating you comfortably. At least you are away from some bad influences. Going by what you have said, I would have made the same decision.

I'm actually quite happy and living quite comfortably now that I have bought a cheap popup tent. I only wish my car could sustain my laptop for longer periods, as it can drain my battery rather quickly. Fortunately, my tablet is less power hungry so I can do basic internet stuff :)
