By the ways, is it possible to make polls in this forum? If so how?

You probably don't have the necessary permissions to create polls.

I believe andrew buck should be able to assign permissions for OD forum but otherwise the site admins

I can't assign permissions, I am only a moderator, not an admin.

Im pretty sure I read a post a while back by the admins that said you could give moderator status to other members in OD forums.

svenskmand {l Wrote}:I do not quite get the argument, which some of you are giving, that one would have to search a lot to find a specific thread.

I'm not sure, but I think you mean "argumentational point", I think I was taught in school that this is one of the popular (German?) mistakes, like "waiter, I would like to become a steak!". Oh my, I'm a grammar totalitarian now, am I?

svenskmand {l Wrote}:Because if you have many sub-forums, then you find the one for the specific category you are looking for. With few sub-forums, there will first of all be many more threads in them, and they would contain much more mixed content, and then one would have to search lot.

The root OD forum would also list all subforums' threads, like viewforum.php?f=26 does.

Please get an OD moderator to decide what the forum structure should be like or get moderator rights (because the moderator will be the one to move all the forums :) )

I am fine with any forum structure you all agree to. There are only ~20 threads at the moment and it doesn't matter whether I subdivide them into 2 subforums, or into 20, as it is the same amount of work either way. I have not been able to really make sense of the moderator functionality, other than how to do very basic stuff. I have more than enough to keep me busy with the coding so I was going to leave all of this discussion to the other forum users here.

I suggest the following: Do many small threads now, then - I don't know after a month? - decide whether the system is good or if you prefer two subforums instead.

Would the ones favoring the two-forum system approve with this procedure?

/me provides andrew with info how to give mod status to a user, in case he wants to assign mod rights.

whoops, didn't see this before.

take a look at the dialog where you can upload files. Next to it is poll creation.

Should we make some sub-forums or what? And who will/can do it then? I could do it if I had the permissions.

I think we should do many sub-forums, AndrewBuck said he would go with the option that the majority of the OD-team would go for and qubodup was also for many sub-forums.

I suggest that we make a vote for it. So I need some candidates, my suggestion was this

Developers
* Gameplay
* Game plot
* Website
* Sounds
* Music
* Textures
* Models
* Mapping
Players
* Installation and upgrading

Charlies suggestion was this:

* General discussion & help
* Art, media & other contributions
* Development & planning

Based on Charlies suggestion, I also made this suggestion:

Artwork/Game Content
- Models, textures, sound, music, mapping, ...
Game-play
- Game plot/back-story, game dynamics, game-play ideas, ...
Administration
- Wiki, forum, website, and other misc. organization tools
Troubleshooting
- Installation, upgrading and compiling problems

where the things after "-" are comments for each sub-forum.

So does anybody have any more suggestions? Then post them here, then I will make a new thread with a poll, so we can vote for each suggestion :)

If you want to establish many forums, then at least keep models and textures together. Why do you want to separate them?

Here I was thinking of textures for the tiles of the game, and models as the creatures with the corresponding textures :) Which is a bit unclean in the categories :S

I changed the forums according to the multi-forums system in the poll. [um, when I started it, the votes were in favor of the multi-forums structure]

I promised an overview of all threads like in viewforum.php?f=26 and I have not yet created it, as it is not possible to have the small "OpenDungeons" link on the index page direct to it. The category with overview of all threads will be either inside the "OpenDungeons" forum or vice-versa. Should I still create it?

Currently, viewforum.php?f=35 and viewforum.php?f=36 serve as overviews of their forums.

PS: a moderator might start sorting. but I believe we have to resolve the voting first.

I like the new structure :)

I also think that the overview for each of the two forums "Developers" and "Players" should be enough :)

I moved the existing threads into the relevant subforums. I did notice that there is no subforum for "Code" so if qubodup could create this I would appreciate it. I plan to put the "State of the code" thread and "bugs", etc into that forum.

I think the list of subforums we have is a nice compromise; enough to separate them into topics well, but not so many that we have a bunch of empty ones. Thank you all for taking the initiative to get this discussion resolved (at least for now during the test period). I have plenty to do just keeping up on the coding so deciding how to organize, etc is not something I want to spend a lot of time at. :)

EDIT: I just noticed qubodup's comment "a moderator might start sorting..." if we decide on a different sorting scheme I can easily move the threads around so feel free to keep making changes to the design. Just because they have been sorted does not mean the design is final.

To add to that frustration, I have just had to go through every thread because they were all marked as unread new posts... oh well
