Roadmap for 0.4.9

Re: Roadmap for 0.4.9

I am currently working on a OD font :) It will be ISO-8859-1 compliant, so we still neeed a fallback unicode font for non-latin characters. When I have the first rough version done I will put it here for you all to comment on.

Can someone push a little further the localization part ?
Seems that most language - dependent context is hardcoded in OD.
That could be solved like making each independent piece of text a separate resource. Then we could have files mapping like File_segment_number -> Resource_id in file or in code say ...,. arght tinygettext probably have all that .... Anyway can someone underpin a direcory with text files like EN.txt, DE.txt , N.txt , Fr.txt which would contain the whole OD's text in English and would be gradually translated by volunteers :).

TinyGetText can do all what you need, and it is already implemented if I recall correctly? But I do not know where the translations should be put. Oln or Stefan can you help out here?

I don't think it's used in the code yet, though I don't think languages should be a priority right now.

Tinygettext should work already. It works exactly like gettext, only that tinygettext neds no compiled language files (it works directly on the .po files).

WIth the current tempo and the absence of the working develeopers the game would never be completed. The goals overdriver the development potential. We need more developers , to attract new first the game must be more widly accessible and recognisable. By accessible I mean -- having the binaries ready in linux or windows install package format. That shouldn't be a big problem , cause after poking here and there on proper forums and IRC we can somehow beg "out " people with knowledge to build the package.
Strategy is this --- sum up what we already have merge in the branches we have ( my branch tiles should be bugged out by this evening) , add some ad hoc Fog of war to the game.
Other features are welcomed -- but they must be doable -- that is to be coded in one , two hours . After that we can start asking for packages top distros of linux are : ( according to distrowatch.com ) :
1 Mint 4260<
2 Ubuntu 2211=
3 Fedora 1607<
4 openSUSE 1434<
5 Debian 1414<
6 Mageia 1309>
7 Arch 1203<
8 CentOS 1059<
9 Puppy 938<
10 PCLinuxOS 789=

11a. And of course windows line of installers as well . ( note : most programming savvy people have/use linux , so W shouldn't be a primery goal.
That way we could have installable packages of OD on -- lets call that deadline 1.06.2012. This might be a good time for looking for developers as most of the higher/ schools and unis would go on summer vaccation --- that would make many students IDLE ( to some extend :D ) .

So , do you agree on such a scheme ?

We need to fix the owership bug as well, if we are to make a release. (Shouldn't be too hard to find.)

1st of june sounds okay, if you think you can sort out the game-breaking tile issues.

I don't see any point in trying to get the game in any official repo until the game has some gameplay.

I have already made scripts to build windows installers and ubuntu packages, I have a PPA for ubuntu. In regards to other distros I am of no help. All my scripts are in the SVN repo, and when you need me to build them just let me know.

Can you share what you have ? Other distro packagers probably would like to have some template to start with for whatever package configuration scripts they use.

EDIT: sorry for all that hashfull mistakes ... I was so excited cause someone offered help in preperaing OD's rpm's for Open Suse :

Proposal for shareware-like postgame screen advert.

No it;'s not what you think, OD is not going to give new levels after postcard, paid registration :D.
With first packaged release we want to interest people with what we have.
Even after an hour of gameplay player won't see all Aces and what the game could become.
So why not make a few postcreen adverts with : addresses to forum and www site ( maybe clickable) , then all the fantastic models, artworks which already exist to be put on screen , but are not in the game, the future fraction systems ( how many , what they are , what units ) , what features the game is going to have, hmm mmaybe a few words about OGRE3D possibilities etc., And of course that developers are needed --- what people do we need , with what skills etc.
Who could do that ? :) :) :)

There is a video for that purpose. I don't think there is much point putting something like that in the game itself.

So, could you make a build out of the latest stuff in the development branch? I think it should be working okay. It's not like we've reached many of the goals, but I figure it won't hurt to get something out atleast.

EDIT: The version strings are 0.4.8, have to fix that first.
EDIT2: Fixed

Ok, I will work on it ASAP, I have a workshop during June 3rd to June 7th, so I will not have much time during the next week. But if the game builds flawlessly I could have it ready in a few days. I but it on my todo list :)

I suppuse you could try to use the tiles2 branch. Since my last changes it's quite stable;

Ok I have a problem when I run ./configure for CEGUI following the guide here. I get the error that PCRE is not found even thought I have done "sudo apt-get install libpcre3". When I look in the configure sh-script I see a line saying "libpcre >= 5.0" so I guess it is because I only have version 3 of PCRE. Anybody how have build the game how to get version 5?

I don't know why that happens, though ubuntu 12.04 has the correct CEGUI and Ogre versions in the official repository if that's what you're using.

I was trying to compile CEGUI from source as written here on the download page. When I run cache-apt show libcegui and press tab I only see libcegui-mk2-0.7.5 as the highest version, but on the download page in the link it says we should use version 0.7.6. That is not true or what?

There was a bug in 0.7.5, that broke compiling on gcc 4.6, but I think it's patched in the version in the repositories, so its okay to use it. (It works fine on my system at least.)

Ok, then I will skip making a package for CEGUI and only make it for OD then :)
