planet.freegamedev.net dead ?

Postby shirish » 16 Jan 2016, 14:31

Hi all,

Either things have gone so quite or whatever but don't see any new activity on the Planet. Either new content is not being churned or people have stopped reporting but whatever it is, it isn't good news.

Only bit of good news I got to know is that ufoai is now in Debian. See http://ufoai.org/wiki/News

I also noticed this when I checked the planet if the news of our game update can already been seen there. It looks like it stopped working over a month ago already. I have not clue who to contact in this case.

I'm afraid it's nobody, I've tried ten times to contact qubodup to help manage this planet, and never got any answer...

Yes qubodup has not been very active lately, and as far as I remember he used to manage the planet.

I have no idea about it and also don't have sufficient access rights to fix it.

But is it really a feature that many people use?

I check it several times a day :) (well I used too, since a couple weeks I understood that it's stuck at the state of November...).

I may try to ping qubodup on GitHub, he's still relatively active there. Just need to find the proper issue to hijack :p

Oh, I can easily send him an email, but he still shows by from time to time, so I guess this will catch his attention (or that of another admin with actual site editing access) sooner or later. No need to stress anyone if it is already down for 2 months... a few days more doesn't matter. This is anyways not the first time this happend, something is a bit flakey with that planet.

Well it's not about stressing anyone, I've been trying to get his attention about the planet sind Feb 2015: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=24&start=100#p62394
And sent him an email via the forum feature in May 2015, without answer either. So yes there is no hurry, but no it won't get fixed by itself either, qubodup has clearly forgotten about this planet :)

Then maybe somebody just send him a mail or something. I don't have the developer chops to do something about it, otherwise would have volunteered for it.

Looks like ghoulsblade has fixed it, it works fine again now: http://planet.freegamedev.net/
(might need to refresh the page once to grab the new contents)

/me go check the RSS feed to see everything he missed since Nov 2015 :p

yay! I really missed this. I used to check this site daily for updates on open-source game development. It's great that it works again.

just came online to see the planet functioning again, only this time it's only gearhead2 people who seem to be blogging about their stuff. Hopefully other foss game developers will take note and re-start blogging as well.

I don't think that's the issue, for instance I'm following FAR colony but somehow those blog posts aren't being featured on the feed, it was there on the previous feed, so something got changed underneath in the way the feed is getting on the planet.

Hi all,
Saw that FAR colony blog posts are being fed to the feed now, but the same things needs to be done for freegamer.blogpspot.com as well. Charlie does give info. about new games or whatever he finds in foss games or free/open culture which also should be reflected on the main feed . For e.g. the recent news about a kickstarter for character collection should also have been on our feed as well.

http://freegamer.blogspot.de/

also wesnoth's new release is also not available on the feed, see wesnoth.org or 0ad which just got a release about 2 weeks back.

And it still dearly misses newer information sources... I'm about to give up, but I would _really_ like to be given access to the planet admin panel/configuration files so that I can add new blogs and remove dead ones.

Yeah, some kind of maintainer would be great. I don't really know how it works if I'm honest. Will post in the admin section of the forum.

It's not dead, just that there hasn't been any news in the last two weeks from the blogs it tracks. Since the list of blogs was never updated since 5 years, it mainly tracks dead projects, so not much to show :)

I've proposed several times to help maintain the planet, but it seems the current maintainer doesn't care much about it...

It's a real pitty.
I wish there were a all-in-all portal of FOSS games with search, sort, screenshots, video, marks and reviews and etc. Similar to Steam or PlayStore.
I sometimes look for something new and fun to play, but usually end up with proprietary games... :(

E.g. I was really amazed to discover RogueBox Adventures by The mighty Glider just a few days ago.
