Story of a Lost Sky

Story of a Lost Sky

Hey there,

Just to make a shout out about a game that is deserving more attention IMHO:

Story of a Lost Sky is a free as in freedom Tactical turn-based JRPG with an interesting twist, colorful characters, and a nice manga-style story.
And they've just reached version 1.0, bringing the full main story out:

Thanks for the shoutout :-)

It looks like a great game indeed. I remember trying it a while ago and giving up because it threw a "unrecognised music format" at my face when starting the game.
Now that they reached 1.0, I gave it another try and found the same error. It turns out it's because they use MP3, and obviously most distros don't build SDL_mixer with MP3 support since the latter is a patent encumbered technology.

They had a bug report for it but resolved it as "just build SDL_mixer yourself with MP3 support, it'll work": https://bitbucket.org/featheredmelody/l ... sic-format

So I added my input and asked them to convert the music to OGG, which works just fine :-)

Not only that, but you have to pay licensing fees to distribute MP3s with a game (at least this was the case when I investigated the issue back in 2004). So legally speaking, they shouldn't be using MP3s at all. So that's another major reason to convert to OGG.

Good to know. Plus, it looks quite easy to fix. I hope they'll fix that, preventing packagers from doing nasty conversion when packaging.

Looks interesting I wil certainly try it when i get to it. But no one should be using mp3 in this day and age anymore, just ogg. Software patents are a huge mess.

If there are Mageians out there, you'll find Story of a Lost Sky in the official repos for Mageia 5 : http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages?view= ... ion=814864 ;-)

Cool :D

How did you deal with the mp3?
EDIT: Ah, you repacked yourself. Ok, I'll add a +1 on issue: https://bitbucket.org/featheredmelody/l ... c/issue/85

Congrats for making it so far with this project and hitting the 1.0.0 milestone. :-)

I knew this game from earlier versions already, but I never played it very long. Maybe I should give it another try.
