Wow, looks nice, nice indeed. (no I'm not patting myself on the back). I'll check in with you later, been busy with other stuff for some days now. Cheers!

Major update:

Garage interface to buy/upgrade cars and weapons, a total of 5 cars, 9 weapons/items, 10 tracks, save/load, numerous smaller improvements.

The game now offers a substantial singleplayer experience: there are 2 leagues with 5 tracks each. Cash is earned by winning a race and/or killing oponents, it can be spent in the garage to buy/upgrade cars and weapons. You advance to next league when you finish 1st on all tracks of current league. Each league has its own set of oponents with different cars & weapons.

Progress is saved to the HTML5 storage on the browser automatically after winning a race. When entering the game again on the same browser, player will be prompted to load a saved game. This is pretty simple, but I think Good Enough for now.

Multiplayer still not back :( but I will work on it. Now that there is a selection of weapons/items with different tactical possibilities, it should be pretty interesting. Better sound is also on my TODO shortlist.

I think the game is turning out pretty fun and addictive, check it out! :)

Played it: It's fantastic!

The sonic wave (or whatever) is quite annoying (balancing might be an issue) when used by AI but the depth of the game so far is quite cool :)

The snow/grass/sand textures are not too pretty. But instead of saying that I should rather be delivering alternatives and additions :)

Thanks!

Yeah, balance is very tough to get right, AI needs lots of work. I'm not really sure how to nerf shockwave, I really like to use it against bots :) A few puddles of oil and a well placed shockwave = extreme pinball.
Maybe reduce bot's supply of ammo for it...

Moar feedback!

Progressing really nicely!

It would be nice with a box that displays the stat difference betwen the selected car and the car you currently have when you buy cars.

Also, does the sound rely on flash? Sound version didn't get past the splash screen when I tested in chrome (with flash disabled.).

EDIT: Chromium that is.

Flash is not used for anything at the moment, sound is implemented with html5. It does work on chrome for me, but not very well. Browser support for html5 sound is pretty bad :/

@Q, Queer Sands is already in the game, 2nd league :P

The game does not preform well on an asus eeepc 1000h with linux + chromium.

Making money/grinding seems quite complicated. I'd add prizes for 2nd and 3rd place.

For a HTML5 game rendered on a canvas element, Bandit Racer is very performance intensive. I don't know about latest chromium builds, but on chrome canvas 2d hardware acceleration is disabled by default . It can be enabled by browsing to "about:flags", but it isnt perfectly stable yet in my experience. If turning hardware acceleration on does not help, then cpu is struggling with the physics simulation :/

Yeah, i think i will do that :)

Added difficulty levels and rewards for 2nd and 3d place.

Difficulty levels control how aggressive bots are with their weapons and how much their top speed is altered if they are ahead/behind the player.

i like the new GUI it is pretty, but imo - and i tried this with a friend - it's not always clear which areas are clickable/active and which are not. i would recommend, have a unified color for anything the user can click on / modify / select. like a neon-green border (this would look ugly) and teach the player that this is clickable area from the startscreen on.
{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
  * hover effect: good! that helps.
  * startscreen:
          * singleplayer/trackeditor are obviously buttons because they are the only 2 text areas here
          * NAME input works. maybe "Your Name:" to make it even clearer
  * 2nd screen:
           * RACE/BACK buttons are buttons, but now diffrently colored (not a problem related to 1st screen but:)
           * the huge garage button now looks like the SINGLEPLAYER/EDITOR button from first screen
           * current car is not changable (maybe also make that a button to the garage?)
           * difficulty is changeable, but looks the same (and both don't look like buttons/interactive elements)
           * race select: the heading looks exactly like the selectable links (hover effect already helps a bit)
   * garage:
       * yet another button color for buy car :)
       * not clear what i can click on - the upgrade buttons are two different colors

unrelated: when i'm just quickly starting a race without paying attention to the car, i find it hard to figure out which car is mine. maybe let is pulsate or .. a border.. or something.

the gameplay itself is solid, no critique about that yet, sorry :)

Just tried it.
It was unplayable in Firefox, since the controls stopped working shortly after starting the game. Also tried it in firefox safe mode: same problem.
In chromium it worked well.

But in both: no sound.

pretty cool game.. it reminds of of this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_'Iron ... r_Off_Road

took me a while to recall what it was called, but i spent many hours as a kid playing this game.. the most fun aspects of the game was buying upgrades for the car and using nitro like crazy. :)

I am a top-view-racer lover and consider myself a gamer but I just could'nt beat the AI, its kind a frustranting... I'd say a lot of good things but those doesn't help you to improve your game. consider AI playing under the same rules players do. I am working in the same kind of game but using neural networks to control the "drones" (its a flash one). How do you control them??

crois, even with the cheating ai, I can beat it fairly easy. But then again I've played it quite a bit. I wonder how you play the game, maybe you focus on the wrong things in upgrades?

The AI simply follows predetermined waypoints. There are difficulty levels, on 'easy' the AI is severly handicapped when it is ahead, and does not get a boost when it is behind, so should be fairly easy to beat even without using weapons :)

My goal with the AI is to make sure that the race never falls into a status quo, where it is impossible for the player to catch up with a bot, or vice versa. If a bot is far ahead, it will slow down to allow the player to catch up. If the player is ahead, bots will speed up (except on easy), catching up with the player and forcing him to defend his position. I feel this makes for more exciting gameplay, especially since the game is focused towards combat rather than racing mechanics :)

I really should get back to tinkering with this game. But oh boy, work, christmas, Skyrim, SWTOR... never enough time :(

Hey,

Got back to developing the game! Big updates, mostly content:

- Third league, with 5 cool new tracks and new bots
- 3 new weapons. Total of 12 now
- 1 new high end car
- After finishing the game, Hell difficulty is unlocked and the player starts back on first league. Hell difficulty is hard + bots have everything upgraded to the max.
- A number of under-the-hood fixes, balance improvements

Sound is still a huge issue, and multiplayer is still missing :(
I hope to focus on bringing back multiplayer for the next update.

The game now has sizeable content and is quite fun, try it if you haven't yet :P
