Common game translations

Common game translations

Postby dopeman » 17 Sep 2014, 21:00

This is a free, open source community-driven mini-project.
The basic idea is to localize the most common terms used in games:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0
Everybody is welcome to add new terms and localizations.
All the text is MIT Licensed so you can use the localizations in your games for free.
Thanks so much, any help is much appreciated!

Nice idea, but how does a developer go about using this in their game? Can you export to a .pot file?

Right now, you can go to File => Download as CSV. Once you have the phrases in CSV format it's not too hard to parse and convert the file.
In the future we may move to a localization server which will probably be able to automatically convert the database to a number of formats.

Seeing as your nick is "dopeman" you really ought to support pot files... just sayin'. :p
Hey pal, I took an oath for justice! "In happy days or tightest tights..." or something like that.

Here is the latest snapshot of the translations, including 23 locales and around 43% complete.
It's in ini format which is probably easier to parse and integrate in your game.

Translated 250 of 1200 lines into Ukrainian. Please, check if I'm doing everything correct.

The pl.ini contains the pt_BR tranlation, and the pt.ini file contains the PL. I didn't check other files but these 3 are wrong.

INI files are not the easiest/best option for internationalisation of software, when a PO? ;)

Wow thanks so much! I've added your translations to the online doc:
http://goo.gl/fhnw1t
By the way, you can add/edit the doc online in your browser instead of using with the ini files (which are slightly out of date).

The pl.ini contains the pt_BR tranlation, and the pt.ini file contains the PL. I didn't check other files but these 3 are wrong.

I use a Lua exporter to convert the google doc file to "ini" format.
This is a bug in the exporter, thanks for pointing it out!

INI files are not the easiest/best option for internationalisation of software, when a PO? ;)

In my opinion is easier to INI maintain, parse and is smaller than PO.
Sure as the project grows there's no problem with providing different file exporters.

Wow thanks so much! I've added your translations to the online doc:

Good. Just editing ini is easier for me, because my computer is rather old... So if it is appliccable, then I'll better use this method.
It's better not to upload it yet, I'll re-check everything as soon as I finish the whole file.

Hey, I understand.
By the way, you don't have to translate the last couple of sections "Territory" and "Date".
Those are generated automatically from the Unicode database.

Ups... In English ini:
loadt=Partidas guardadas
at line 645
Thou it seems to be Spanish, not English

UPD: Preliminary complete Ukrainian translation. I'll re-check it in a few days.

I think this may be a glitch since it's ok in the online version.
It should be:
loadt=Load

UPD: Preliminary complete Ukrainian translation. I'll re-check it in a few days.

Attached is the latest snapshot with Bulgarian, Spanish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Portuguese Brazilian and Ukrainian at nearly 100%.
Eugene, if you want to have your game translated just send me the words and we can see what can be generalized and added to the project.
Thanks so much!

Finished re-checking and uploaded the final version

I don't know the meaning of these 7 lines so I left them 'as is' and put a fpc-style comment '//' before them
//statsl=Language statistics
//pspeakers=5.43
//pinternet=28.6
//psteam=49.64
//statsp=Translation statistics
//total=12
//ptotal=100
Translation is for the first 850 lines, as you've told that others are generated automatically

Eugene, if you want to have your game translated just send me the words and we can see what can be generalized and added to the project.

Thank you for your proposal... But I'm afraid my game uses rather unique terminology (RPG/Strategy) and lots of text which cannot be generalized...
Thanks so much!

You're welcome. I'm glad I can help. In case you need help with finishing Russian, I can do that too, just tell me.

These are stats about the percent of wordwide speakers, internet users and steam users who understand the language.
For Ukrainian it should be:
pspeakers=0.46
psteam=0.21

Thanks again, I've added your translation to the online doc!
