Game forks

I know only few cases of forks in open source games:
  • SuperTuxKart is a fork of TuxKart - in terms of quantity of content and it's looks, the fork is for the better. I can't say anything about the other aspects (controls etc), as I never played TuxKart. I couldn't compile it.

  • Speed Dreams (formerly known as TORCS-ng) is a fork of TORCS - so far I can only say that Speed Dreams is better in terms of technical project management (it uses Trac) and game menu visuals (compare these videos: SD - TORCS). I didn't look closely at content and controls.

Do you know of any more free software games that are forks of others?

PS: Quake engine X is a fork of Quake engine Y etc. (see quake engine family tree) let us.. just ignore them ;)

- Sauerbraten to Blood Frontier and Syntensity
- FreeLords to LordsAWar (continuation)
- TuxRacer to PlanetPenguinRacer to ExtremeTuxRacer (continuation)
- Crossfire to Crossfire++
- Egoboo to Egoboo-zippy (and back)
- Freerails to Freerails2 (continuation)
- Lincity to Lincity-NG

That's off the top of my head. I am sure there are more... but I'm tired and need to sleep.

No, it's not. SoulFu is a second game from the original Egoboo author. (Despite the similarities, it's not a sequel.) I think it was rewritten from scratch although that's from memory so I might be mistaken.

I remind me of another fork, so it's not a real fork but it has the same taste for the original dev regarding the animosity between Tremulous dev and Tremfusion dev in their forums. I'm talking about Tremfusion which is a Tremulous client fork compatible with the Tremulous servers. Tremfusion is in heavily development and its special feature is this client can be runned with ioquake 3 (the tremulous legacy engine) or with Xreal an highly advanced id Tech 3 engine which aims the same quality level of id Tech 4 !!

ActionCube is a fork of Cube, kinda. (I think they maintain their own version of Cube...)
