Possibility of getting the Nitemare-3D source?

Possibility of getting the Nitemare-3D source?

Postby Cire » 25 Sep 2012, 19:54

Would anyone else be interested in getting the Nitemare-3D source code released? Maybe it could be worth asking David Gray if he would be willing to liberate it. He might be, considering he gave the Hugo Trilogy source to the ScummVM guys. What do you think?

the source code is likely completely irrelevant, so I don't think he shouldn't have any big issues with releasing it. in fact, the only reason I can think of (and trust me, this is not in any way uncommon) is that the code is so awful that he'd be embarrassed to release it. but by all means, send him an email and take the temperature on the matter.

It was a pretty fast raycaster in its time.

I meant more in terms of one letter variable names, inconsistent indentation and bracer-placement, bunch of inline code in the headers, twenty procedures that are copy-pasted save for a line or two, fifteen thousand #define PI 3.13, etc. all of which are quite common in proprietary games.

did he give any reason for upholding this anti-social behaviour?

This is the e-mail he sent back:

Thanks for your inquiry, but no. I have no plans
to release any of my source code to the public
domain - the Hugo code was not released to the
public domain, only to the very small team that
implemented the ScummVM support. I did recently
review the Nitemare code with a view to porting
it to a cross platform IDE. Unfortunately, unlike
the Hugo code, it has large amounts of 16-bit
assembler embedded within it and would be a
nightmare to port. It is on my to-do list,
however as currently it can't run under 64-bit
Windows. Thanks for asking, though.

If I was a developer who just said "no" to a request out of the blue to release my code and then saw somebody write this about my reply, I'd think "screw the open source community!".

Yeah, I kinda agree, it was mostly a wild guess of a chance I took. At least it was nice of him to reply, and it's nice to know that he's willing to port it to a cross platform IDE.

good. I don't like the open source community either, so then we'd have something to talk about. ;-)

Hi Cire, you should make him aware you are posting his responses publicly, if for nothing else than full disclosure.

I think this troll is miss reading your post qubodup.

I do agree that such statements are dumb and not in line with our philosophy, to say that anyone who does not release their code do so because of any lacking of their part (beside the lacking of an open source idea) is counterproductive to this community.
I agree with Q until I post differently.
