Wish-List: Open Source Clones

semiletov {l Wrote}:20. Fallout 1 and 2.

I have been searching for open-source reimplementation of Fallout 1/2 engine for ages. There were several attempts at it. One of them called IanOut got quite popular and made some progress, but it eventually failed like all the others before it. However, there is a relatively new project called falltergeist. It doesn't do much at the moment, it only displays rudimentary S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system, but judging by the quality of source code I think it has a great potential. The combination of SDL, C++ and CMake should make it easier for other developers to join the project.

Yes, I read this thread and I saw a mention of DNT. It looks nice, but I don't see the connection with Fallout. Postapocalyptic satirical RPG? There are tons of those. Also, it has completely different style.

What I would also like to see is:
32. Europa Universalis - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europa_Universalis_II
33. Hearts of Iron (could be done on the same engine as EU) - http://www.heartsofirongame.com
34. Majesty - http://www.paradoxplaza.com/games/majesty-gold#images_game-tab

It seems we need another mod for 0AD. In the future everything will be a 0AD mod. :D

Someone posted a (pre-alpha) dungeon crawler on OGA recently, but I don't know if it'll be open source. This Ultima seems to be a bit different, though. I've only played Ultima 4 which was pretty nice, too.

As for Ultima Underworld: The arx fatalis engine is open source licensed (GPL I believe) and cross-platform and has good performance (I finished the game with it on an EeePC 1000H, Linux), but whether it's feasible for creating new games, I don't know.

It's easy to point at open source engines for their existence disregarding the obvious lack of a content pipeline and other vital parts of foundation of a new game from them.

Dark Omens, one of the best games in that genre.

Games I would like to see cloned (basically make a game very similar to the original with new open source graphics, but very similar game play
Also, my list of (closed source) favorite games of all time.

1) Ultima Online (okay, well I'm currently working on this one myself, I can't get to them all alright, so I'm just doing one and changing the parts of the game I hated the most like too much client side, the way too many things got dumped into the magic skill etc. It has all new lore of course, not based on the ultima series, but its also a 45 degree isometric multi-player rpg.) The game is called Wograld, and it is at www.wograld.org
2) Heroes of Might and Magic (any of them really, but 2 was my favorite, I loved the map editor, I would love a free software version with all new graphics and better game balance.
3) Master of Magic, its like civilization, but with magic, I haven't played it in a long time, but I always loved it. Someone could fork that sim or civilization clone to make this.
4) Final Fantasy Five ( I loved the job system too) I liked final fantasy in general up through number 7. Eight had horrid game mechanics though. So did number 10, I never tried 9.
5) Ultima 7 and Ultima 7 serpents isle, similar games, but I would love an open source game with a very similar "feel" to those two, without all the issues like being optimized for dos, having items disappear and of course all new graphics, story. I thought maybe the code base for the original Exult engine could work, but really that whole this is a pain to work with, at least last time I tried (as far as adding new graphics and stuff.
6) I liked the Castlevania series, basically a Gothic horror plat former with rpg elements. I don't think about this one quite as much though.

Notice I'm not listing strait up plat formers like the mario series or the diabalo series, because we already have clones of them, super tux and flare respectively.

There are engine reimplementation projects for both HoM2 and HoM3, they just need replacements of the graphics.

I wish for a low-hardware requirements clone of Super Space ____ , which is a 1-4 player arcade shooter, in which each player controls a cannon that is attached to the same "boat" or "block".

Maybe a clone of Super Mario Galaxy? :) There was a Super Blender Galaxy, but it uses assets of Super Mario Galaxy

SpeedBall is very interesting to me aswell, the pretty limited 2D nature of the game means there's a fair chance that a team of 3 talents could likely do a fully polished implementation, propably with networked multiplayer and all. It'd be massively awesome to have a player controlling each unit on screen in multiplayer matches.

What about a platformer run-and-gun clone (like contra, metal slug or sunset riders)? I think there are dozens if not hundreds of proprietary games like this, but none that are open source.

(except for one: Abuse, but I have no idea how extensible that codebase is)

About Abuse: The source is here http://abuse.zoy.org/wiki/download
