Are you a 2D artist? Track Editor Needs you!

Postby elath » 14 Jul 2014, 09:51

Hello everyone!

I am the student working on the track editor. My graphics skills are... hmm... let's just say that not everyone likes the icons I drew:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/cnkftwssx7rv0h5/myicons.png

Would be nice to have someone kind enough to contribute to the editor by drawing a few icons.
Thanks,
Elath

Hi, I believe to have somebody starting that, a few icons need clarification.. I summarize what I figured out so far:
{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
-- Top row:
New ??? Load Save | Undo Redo | Select Move Rotate (Scale?) | ??? | ??? | ??? ||| Settings Exit

-- Side bar, top:
Terrain | Objects | Track

-- Terrain Tab:
Dig
BrushErase BrushPaint Lighting

If you could correct and complete that list, that would be awesome :)
I assume, the other tabs have own icons too?

Thanks, and sorry, here is a list:

-- Top row:
New, open, save, export || redo, undo || select, move, rotate, scale, remove || switch camera mode || turn on/off road editor mode || run stk with current map || map settings || exit

-- Side bar, top:
Terrain | Objects | Roads | Items + lights
-- Terrain Tab:
Switch texture buttons
Dig
Soft Brush | Hard Brush | Lighting
-- Objects Tab:
previous & next buttons
-- Road Tab
(driveline & road mesh is created via spline. You define the spline with control points).
place new point at the end | insert point inside | finish spline creation
create road

I forgot to say in my first post: All icons done by me in this thread are CC0.
Also, if you prefer to have them as single files, or as one atlas, then let me know :)

Very nice work, some of those might need a little higher contrast but I guess seeing how they are in use will eventually reveal whether they do or not. :)

And next bunch of icons.

I will first complete the whole set, then adress the ones that need treatment or replacement.
The problematic contrast especially on the move/rotate/scale icons was mentioned, then I misread "map settings" as "general editor settings", will change that too. Also the Terrain-tab is inconsistent, will be first-person view like the other tab headers. Maybe the brushes have too low contrast between handle and hairs as well.

My bad, sorry. That should be general editor settings. The current icon is cool :D

I think it would be better to not include the word "run" in the "Run STK with current map" icon. It is not good for localized / translated versions :)

I know i'm late on this topic because riidom already start to work on icons, but i worked on a new pixel-art icons set.
It's largely inspired by riidom work:

Why pixel-art? Because everybody loves it and i think it's simpler to maintain for next contributors.

It's under CC By Sa 3.0, feel free to modify.
Source file are in the zip archive (.xcf)

PS: I think we need also to change the font in this editor. ;)

The alternative is to create a collection on OpenGameArt, upload there and link here. :)

And the source, also CC-0 (it is not zipped, just remove the ".zip" at the end of file name):

Dakal, nice icons, though I find the "turn on/off road editor mode" icon difficult to read/interpret.
For your concerns about the ease of expansion - I think in the STK community are enough people who can deal with blender. And if you take a look at the blend file, you will see, how deadsimple everything is faked.

Let me know if there are any final critics, so I can start the last round of improvements. As soon as everything is fine, I will stop abusing freegamedev's poor servers and upload everything to OGA :)

So far I prefer riidom's icons. As implementing user-selectable icon themes is overkill for an editor, we should pick one set.

Elath, can you post screenshots of the editor with both sets so we can see them in context?

Hello :-)

Thanks for your contributions

However I have some recommendations
From a usability stand point I strongly recommend to remove any gradient in the background. Avoid red and green (people who have altered color vision can't distinguish them).

You should work in vectorial. So we can scale them.

The pixel art version is too small. I can't see them with my phone.

The other version uses red and green mixed together and a distracting gradient on the background.

They should works in black and white only.
The goal isn't to make something artistic but useful for a daily work with it.

I agree with samuncle on the red-green thing. I haven't yet checked if they look good in greyscale (just use gimp to convert to grayscale temporarily, to emulate a person without color vision).

The gradient is not too strong IMHO, it should be ok as is.

I recommend you as a starting point to look at other modern editors.

Like maya, Photoshop, blender, unreal engine 4.

The whole editor should be dark. So artist can more easily distinguish colors.
Focus on the shape in a black and white + one color in vectorial.
Then we can start to add gradient and stuff like that

Too bad, I will still continue to work on it. This is not lost and will surely useful elsewhere.
I like artistic things but indeed it's not relevant in this case.

Pixel art might be fine.
Work on something that will be used ;).
Use vector so we can scale it. We have 40px*40px so use them. With vector we can adjust it easily.

That's a thumbnail. You need to click it to see the full sized image - the icons are of a comparable size to riidom's.

So, my last iteration, it contains: put new grid to delete icon too, better terrain tab icon, hard brush fits better to stroke now, with regard to red/green-weakness I changed the spline colour in the road tabs' icons.
The other occurances of red&green I left untouched, because they are not critical to perceiving the icons. Shape and/or contrast are the major identifiers there, colours are just a minor additional hint.
Also I left the gradient inside, because I think it is subtle enough to not be annoying. It is easy to change though (just a chore), simply replace the material on each background plane and re-render.

For easier updating, .zip and preview of the recently touched ones:

So i finished this first icon set even if it isn't fit well with the editor.
I updated the dig icon, the editor icon and add 'pressed' on each icon.
