How to run a Super Tux Kart Tournament

How to run a Super Tux Kart Tournament

Postby jsandys » 11 Mar 2016, 04:40

I am interested in running a Super Tux Kart Tournament in the Fedora booth at LinuxFest NorthWest at the end of April.

Any advise? Has anyone done this before?
Is there a program or script to help manage a Tournament?

Computer setup: one computer with four monitors, or four computers networked?
And additional computer to start and control the race?

Thanks,
Jeff Sandys

Hello and welcome to the SuperTuxKart Community :)

We made a few days ago our first official tournament at Japan Impact, that allowed us to gather some interesting feedback and gain in experience.

The goal was to make a fun competition between players. The setup was rather easy. 16 players could register divided in groups of 2 people.
We used split screen multiplayer since the network isn't ready yet.
Each stage had a very precise grand prix associated with it, so everyone plays the same tracks.
We also only used next generations maps (because they are more colourful and beautiful to see from a public perspective). I will ask the person who helped me to create to give you more details
{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
First stage (from 16 to 8 players):
Number of tracks: 1 (to allow a quick stage)
Number of players per race: 2
Number of laps per tracks: 3
Number of races: 8

Second stage (from 8 to 4 players):
Number of tracks: 2 (to allow a quick stage)
Number of players per race: 2
Number of laps per tracks: 3
Number of races: 4

Third stage (from 4 to 2 finalist and 2 remainder)
Number of tracks: 3 (A bit more challenging)
Number of players per race: 2
Number of laps per tracks: 3
Number of races: 2

After the third stage the players who won it will do the final and the remaining players will do a race to try to win the third place.

Fourth stage (to win the third place):
Number of tracks: 5
Number of players per race: 2
Number of laps per tracks: 3
Number of races: 1

Final stage (to win the first place):
Number of tracks: 5
Number of players per race: 2
Number of laps per tracks: 3
Number of races: 1

The prize where the following:
First: A big SuperTuxKart exclusive poster, a cup and various goodies
Second: A big SuperTuxKart exclusive poster, various goodies
Third: A big SuperTuxKart exclusive poster

Other players: A small SuperTuxKart exclusive poster

It's rather challenging to organize a tournament. We spend a few days making sure everything will work. Also you have to take into account what happen if people aren't present when they should.

Here is our quick todo list created for the event:
How many players will participate?
What are the prize given to the winner?
How many players will play at the same time?
How many stage there will be?
What tracks will be used during the tournament?
What happen if someone stop the competition?
How much goodies and gift will cost?
What will be the marketing associated with the event? Flyers, giant screen, SuperTuxKart showcase?
Where will we announce this? Twitter?, Facebook?
/!\ It took us roughly two weeks and two people to organize this. So be aware it might be a lot of work.
Also I know in general geeks and open source enthusiasts are allergic to marketing. However, this is a good opportunity to show Open Source software under a positive and fun light.

Here are some of the stuff we did for the tournament:
Flyers (with a small swiss chocolate, given to everybody who are near our booth

Now of course each tournament is different and in this case I wasn't directly involved with the tournament. I was in charge of all the marketing/side stuff. Maybe we can also publish our event in our twitter account. If the Auria/Hiker are ok, I'm ok with it. However don't try to present yourself from the SuperTuxKart team ;).

I hope I gave you some interesting informations, if you need more

samuncle, thanks for the great reply.

I typed a long response only to have it lost when I hit submit :<
So I try again later, but first a few short questions.

Can STK do a 4 player split screen?
Can it use 4 Wii controllers or would 4 USB game controllers be better?
Can you recommend 5 tracks for a tournament from short and easy (<5 minutes for beginner) to more challenging for the final (~10 minutes)
Are the Karts uniform in performance?
Can the computer controlled Karts be adjusted for competitiveness?

Longer notes and reason for these questions coming later.

This tournament will be at a LinuxFest and I want as many people as possible to participate. We will be featuring gaming in Linux, showing STEAM, Windows games with WINE, Fedora repository games featuring network games, and the OLPC games. The object is to show guests that Linux is a viable gaming platform and that using Linux doesn't mean giving up games.

There are about 2000 guests at this LinuxFest, it would be impossible to have them all participate in a tournament, and none of these guests will register in advance. I plan to give tickets to the winners to participate in the next round for a specified race at an approximate time, the first round will be first come first serve. Here is the schedule:

First Stage (128+ to 32+ players)
1 Track, 1 Race, 4 players per race, 4-5 minutes
32+ races, 1st place advances,
32 players advance with alternates from extra races
Allow 4 hours

Second Stage (32 to 16 players) alternates can fill in
1 Track, 1 Race, 4 players per race, 5-6 minutes
8 races, 1st and 2nd advance
Allow 2 hours

Third Stage (16 to 8 players) alternates can fill in
1 Track, 1 Race, 4 players per race, 6-8 minutes
4 races, 1st and 2nd advance
Allow 1 hour

Fourth Stage (8 to 4 players)
1 Track, 1 Race, 4 players per race, 8-10 minutes
2 races, 1st and 2nd advance
Allow 30 minutes

Fifth Stage (4 players to winners)
1 Track, 1 Race, 4 players, 10-15 minutes
1 Race, First and Second place win prizes
Allow 30 minutes

I want to run 4 players per race, can STK do a 4 player split screen? We will have a large 1080 or better TV/monitor.
I plan to use the Wii controllers in the steering wheel holders is this OK?
What 5 tracks would you recommend for this schedule above?

I want players to focus on the race instead of customizing the Karts, so are the Karts uniform in performance?
It would be nice to have a fifth computer controlled Kart that would set a threshold for the first race, so that none, one or two players advance out of the first race depending on performance. Is this possible?
Ideally the first race would be timed only and the top 32+ times would advance in a seeded tournament tree. But at the Fest there are a lot of other activities for people to do and they wouldn't want to spend all their time waiting for results.

Sorry for the naive questions, I have only played STK a couple of times against the computer. I believe STK is the best game to give a fun experience to as many guests as possible. If you can think of a better game for this type of tournament, please tell me.

Thanks,
Jeff
