STK bad performance

Postby pedrofleck » 15 Dec 2014, 14:13

Hello, I'm using ArchLinux with everything up to date.
My STK performance is really bad, even with the worst graphic (but in 1920x1080) settings some maps run at 11~25 fps
I have a i5 4670k (HD4600 GPU) and 8gb of RAM, is that normal with the HD 4600 (isn't a really bad GPU)?

Hello

What's the version of stk used ?
Also 1920*1080 = full HD. It's something that even next gen console have some issues to achieve. It requires a lot of power. Try to reduce the resolution maybe it can help.

It's the latest in Arch repositories (0.8.1)
I know, but I'm running Euro Truck Simulator 2, for example, in Full HD (minimum graphics too) and it's ok

Now I tried changing the resolution to 1280x720 (and maximum graphics, including 8x AA) and it's running flawlessly (stable 60 fps) and looking a lot better than 1080p with low graphics, is that normal?

I'm not very familiar with 3-D rendering, but it sounds normal to me. More pixels = more work, and 1080p has more than twice as many pixels as 720p (2.25 times as many, to be exact). As for looking better, that makes sense, too; resolution is only one factor in how good something looks, and at some point, it becomes a really minor factor. This is why I don't personally have any interest in high-DPI screens.

If you have weather effects enabled, then it is probably lighthouse track, because rain is fps killer in 0.8.1 version :P Performance also depends a lot on number of oponents. It will run much faster with 4 oponents than with 19 (max value).

If you have Arch linux, then regressions in drivers are very probable. I was experimenting with graphics drivers in the past and in very recent versions you need to have specific version of kernel/mesa/xorg driver etc. Otherwise regressions may appear. But you probably know about it if you use Arch ;)

Anyway Intel HD4600 should be enough to run 0.8.1 version in 1920x1080 (I don't say about git version).

For the git version a loooot was done to improve performance of several AI and to support mutlicore CPU.

Improvements have also been made with OpenAL (the sound lib). However since we changed the graphical engine now we are on average "slower" because we do more computation (for shadows, lights, etc).
